Review of Gerald's Game (2017) by Jon C — 28 Sep 2017

One of Carla Gugino's best performances.

Based on the book by Stephen King it deals with a lot of disturbing content from repressed memories, childhood trauma, and mind games.

Jesse and her husband, Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) go up to a secluded cabin for a long weekend to improve their love-life but it takes a dark turn when he has a heart attack during the seduction and she's helplessly handcuffed to the bed with no means of escape.

She can suffer starvation, dehydration or risk getting torn to shreds by a rabid dog.

It's a mind game as she fights off her inner demons of what went wrong with her marriage to what happened when she was 12 years old.

There's some frightening imagery inside her head not to mention a very gory scene involving her escape, I actually turned away because it was so damn graphic.

The film takes some time to take off since it's confined to one area but Gugino pulls it off so well.

The choice is up to her to give in or keep trying.

Our minds can trap us at any moment during a horrific situation but they also create monsters if we let them.

Another fine Stephen King adaptation.
