Review of Gerald's Game (2017) by Michael M — 04 Nov 2018
Stephen King's been having a pretty great run recently (with a lot more stuff being planned) and hasn't done too badly in the past either, but I have to admit, I've never read any of his books and the film adaptations so far (as great as some of them are) haven't given me any reason to think I should.
That is, until this little gem came along. The initial premise is already clever, entirely plausible and venturing well into scary territory, but that's just the beginning and it has no intention of stopping there.
Building suspense and intrigue, it adds different levels and styles of horror onto what's already happening, blending real-life with the other-worldly. It also continuously surprises by revealing new and unexpected elements for both the story as well as the visuals, adding more depth.
The whole thing's just thick with atmosphere. The acting is fantastic too, but it's undoubtedly Carla Gugino's outstanding performance that keeps you so utterly captivated. Ultimately, I think what I love most about 'Gerald's Game' is that how well it combines different genres, managing to be scary in a different way to your typical Horror film, but also has so much more to offer than just that.
