Review of Geostorm (2017) by Richard S — 23 May 2018
Geostorm isn't quite as bad as I expected but it isn't far off. Disaster movies are a bit of a guilty pleasure, volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, tidal waves, anything involving nature kicking 10 shades out of humankind I enjoy. There are some decent ones out there and some very bad ones. I never expected this to be a masterpiece, it's like The Day After Tomorrow with a sci-fi twist. In a bit of unlikely casting uber-brained scientist Gerard Butler designs what looks like a giant net of satellites to control the Earth's weather systems to defend us from an environmental disaster. Baddies hack the satellites in an absurd plot to control the presidency of the United States while having the added bonus of wiping out all enemies of America in one mega environmental smackdown.
There are some decent CGI effects on show as locations throughout the world are taken out via water and fire and really big hail stones, the acting is average at best and the plot is ridiculous, none more so than when the solution to the Geostorm is revealed. Despite this I did watch the entire movie, so at least it wasn't so bad I had to switch off!
