Review of Georgia Rule (2007) by Stu H — 02 Nov 2008
I've read a number of the reviews here, trying to understand why the general feeling on this movie is negative. I think it's largely because of the way it was marketed. Those that base their opinions based on these preconceptions are not going to like this movie.
I didn't expect much to begin with, but I was pleasantly surprised. To those that said a comedy can't deal with sexual abuse, I don't see why not. The theme I got from the movie is that you don't really know what someone else has gone through in life, and that making judgments based on your preconceived notions can be a huge mistake.
The sad fact in life is that these sorts of problems are around. You can't hide from them, although most people want to. So, when confronted with them by surprise, people can't seem to deal with it.
The movie is well-acted. Lohan is so convincing in her role that it almost doesn't feel like acting (which is a bit scary, given the subject matter). Felicity Huffman was excellent in her role as the mother as well and entirely convincing.
