Review of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) by Sara C — 04 Mar 2012
Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe are just the perfect combination for this movie, it was just designed for the two of them in mind. Their contradictory nature, hair color and ideals are a great foundation to launch a series of misunderstandings, catchy musical numbers and memorable quips from.
Jane Russell proves herself beyond critique when she bounces back from the accident with the Olympic team and the swimming pool. Her ability to brush it off and carry on, playing it off as part of the script was memorable and damn impressive. Actor, nowadays, could learn a thing or too from her. The fact that she never won an Oscar, or was even nominated for one, when the likes of Jonah Hill was, should be considered one of the biggest injustices of the century.
Overall this movie was one of Marilyn's and Russell's best musicals, and became an instant classic the minute it hit the silver screen. Remember, "diamonds are the girl's best friend".
