Review of Gentlemen Broncos (2009) by Martin A — 15 Jul 2010
Shouldn't be taken so seriously! Some moments of hilarity in this one, mostly provided by the greats, Jemaine Clement and Sam Rockwell. Must admit seeing Sam Rockwell playing an overlly camp adventurer dressed in pink was brilliant. Jemaine Clement was of course very funny and this shows he should be in more comedy films. Michael Angarano is an actor who I'm becoming quite fond of, particularly after seeing him in The Man In The Chair with Christopher Plummer, and he gets the quirks and nervousness of his character perfect in this one.
Apart from these aspects though, the film does just seem to make people cringe more rather than laugh out loud, there were moments of pure awkwardness. You know you're going to be getting crude humour, but this still felt too uncomfortable. I'm not going to dwell on that though as this film has been unfairly critisized I think. The creators of this were of course the creators of Napoleon Dynamite, which is seen as a cult classic. That is a film I am undecisive on, although the second viewing was funnier than the first. They are also behind Nacho Libre, which I thought was a hilarious triumph.
Overall, a good, silly slice of fun. But not one to watch if you're easily embarrassed.
