I can see why critics hated this. It cheerfully revels in bad and tasteless aesthetics-- all the things critics love to moralize against. However, I thoroughly enjoyed its messy mixture of low-brow surrealism, loving homages to z-grade sci-fi, and general awkwardness.
It runs out of steam by the third act but I laughed throughout.
