Review of Gentlemen Broncos (2009) by Robert B — 13 May 2010
Brave. Definitely quirky. And quite obviously, not everyone's cup of tea. I had high hopes for this, FOTC's Jemaine Clements along with Sam Rockwell, how could you go wrong? Well the truth is, they really didn't.
This was everything it set out to be, an odd piece of work based on odd people, and their odd pieces of work. I guess it just has one too many flat, dull spots throughout and thats probably why it was really hit and mostly miss with the viewing audience and critics alike.
That being said, there was plenty to like about Angarano's performance, Rockwell was sublimely ridiculous and Jennifer Coolidge steals her scenes, as she has a real tendency to do. There is some genuine comedy in some of the sequences, enough to make me have respect for what the film was trying to achieve, but overall it was a case of close, but no cigar.
