Review of Gentlemen Broncos (2009) by Stephen L — 30 Oct 2010
You guys, it's Jared Hess. His movies are never fully enjoyed until the second time around. Is this movie quirky? Very much so. Is it a little crude? Unconventionally yes. The standard fare here is your either in the audience this movie aims at or you're not. If you are not, you'll find this cringing and painful. If you are, you'll find this delightfully cringing and painfully funny. Or if your me, you'll form an opinion a few months later.
The mixed bag of different humor seems like standard dry, tongue-in-cheek, and slightly crude stuff. That said, this movie is Jared Hess' weakest work. As much as I found it funny at the time I kinda feel like he's trying a bit too hard.
Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement are great in the movie but even then, they don't really bring the movie out of its mediocrity.
I'd like to see Jared continue working in film but I'd really like him to try something new.
