Review of Gentlemen Broncos (2009) by Tom R — 20 Jan 2012
(4 Stars) Gentlemen Broncos is funnier than Napoleon Dynamite. That being said, if you didn't like Napoleon Dynamite, you won't like this one either, but I'd be lying to you if I said I didn't laugh a lot watching this movie.
The simplicity of the story, direction, and dialog is witty; director Jared Hess has a Wes Anderson-esque talent to punctuate little details that equal a lot of humor. The movie features fantasy scenes with Sam Rockwell saying ridiculous dialogue and doing ridiculous things.
Rockwell is funny, but I prefer the 'real world' scenes with Michael Angarano, Jennifer Coolidge, and Jemaine Clement and the microcosm of "really bad science fiction stories." A full-of-himself author plagurizing from an amateur writer has loads of potential for a comedy and this film has the right amount of absurdity.
I concede that this type of film is not for everyone and it's much, much stranger than Napoleon Dynamite. But the reviews for it are way more scathing than it deserves and Gentlemen Broncos is funny enough for a viewing, provided you like this kind of movie.
