Review of Gentlemen Broncos (2009) by Mitchell B — 20 Apr 2012
Some directors, like Wes Anderson, have a clearly defined style that encourages copycats. Others, like Tim Burton, have a unique and singular vision that may lead to being pigeon-holed. Then there are directors like Jared Hess, who not only defy convention but seem to just go out of their way to fill a swimming pool full of weirdness and cannonball naked into it.
Gentlemen Broncos is the product of someone who isn't operating in our realm of normalcy. It may be awful or genius, I just don't know. Whereas his previous films, Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre have been flights of fancy based in somewhat plausible settings, Gentlemen Broncos is a rocketship to the planet Bonkers launched from Cape Crazy.
I know that most people will find Broncos to be terrible but I couldn't help the goofy smile that spread across my face as both versions of Yeast Lord Sam Rockwell flew armed battle-stags against hordes of tank-chair bound cyclops's (cyclopi?).
In the words of Ronald Chevalier, "Everything sounds better when you add anous.".
