Review of Gentlemen Broncos (2009) by Nick P — 10 Apr 2010

I will admit, I enjoyed Napolean Dynamite. I thought its dead pan humor matched its flat characters who lived in the boring landscape of Idaho. It also knew how to make a joke without having to delve into potty humor.

So I watched Gentlemen Broncos, a film from the same director hoping for more of the same. While it certainly tried to capture the feel of Napolean Dynamite (which, at times, it did), overall its a complete misfire that just tries to hard.

Far to often, the movie relied on poop jokes that came out of nowhere and had no relevance to the plot. There was also a lot of sexual confusion in a few characters that just felt incredibly awakward to watch and, also, served no purpose. It has more of a plot than the director's previous film, this is about plagarism, however it is segmented by awkward dramatizations of the protganosits novel that gets caught up in the mess.

However, I will give credit to the opening sequence, which used a montage of pulpy sci-fi novel covers to show the cast and crew (which, to be fair, is taken from the dinner plate credits of Napolean Dynamite). Also, Jemaine Clement has a good preformance as an egotistical author of pulpy sci-fi.

If you didnt like Napolean Dynamite, you wont like this movie, and if you did, you probably wont like it either.
