Review of Gentleman's Agreement (1947) by Mark W — 15 Jun 2010
This movie would have been better if it has someone else besides Gregory Peck in the lead role. At times he came over more as a prig than as a courageous campaigner for equality, and I am sure that was not the intent of the movie.
Still, it may be the only movie I have ever seen that has really made the point about what discrimination and racism really is and what can be done about it. Other movies on the topic focus in on the extreme and the crackpots whom we can all revile for their greater crimes.
This one focuses on the silence and the acceptance of which most of us are guilty at least some of the time, and without which the crackpots and the violent ones would have no oxygen to breathe and no ground to stand on.
Dorothy McGuire is wonderful in this.
