Review of Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould (2009) by Eric G — 31 Jan 2011
Glenn Gould is known mostly for two things: his two interpretations of the Bach Goldberg Variations and his mysterious recluse personality. This documentary explores the life of Gould, generally considered as a genius, with some rare footage, interviews of his friends, his wife and stepchildren. The mysterious man becomes much less mysterious as we attempt, although it's hardly possible with Gould, to enter his mind and understand him.
Listening AND watching him play the 1955 version of the Goldberg Variations, his technique and velocity are mesmerising! All of this effortlessly... Impressive.
He was also a visionary of technology, one of the first to focus on recording for radio and imagining how people would be able to play and make their own music from others. 50 years ahead of his time!
The documentary is well structured although there are some lengths towards the middle. Worth watching even if you're not into classical music.
