Review of Gender Wars (2015) by Timothy H — 09 Oct 2017
When you have a name like Battle of the Sexes and your a period piece from the 70s, you need to have something poignant to say about woman's rights. So, as I watched the movie, I was confused on two different points.
A) Is this about feminism or ageism, b/c it leaves a large question mark about whether the battle was fair to begin with. We find that Bobby Riggs is 55, popping pills, and having a wrist issue. Did King win because women are equal to men and she was superior to Riggs, or did she win b/c over aged ass who popped pills and couldn't handle a game at a young men's (women's) level? B) Is this about feminism or lesbianism? A woman can be a lesbian and a feminism, but a straight married feminist is a story about the someone on the inside breaking the mold, while a lesbian from the 70s is a story about someone breaking the mold from the outside trying to find normalcy.
This story doesn't make a clear statement on either counts and thus I am left confused by a movie called 'Battle of the Sexes.'.
