Review of Gattaca (1997) by Richard S — 13 Apr 2011
I really enoyed this film - but, as with a lot of films I think it's best to watch them around the time they were released in order to fully appreciate their relevance. I only saw parts of this when it came out and didn't watch it properly until recently. It's a beautifully written piece of Science Fiction with well fleshed out lead characters - particularly those played by Hawke and Law. Gattaca is also beautiful to look at - I thought the lighting was done really well, and the sets suited the theme perfectly.
The only thing I thought was a little strange was that - in this futuristic world where babies can be made to specific genetic specifications and people are rocketing through space everyday to places like Saturn; how is it that a man with a broken back cannot be made to walk again? Maybe I missed something... but it just seemed a little odd to me.
I think all the performances were really good, especially the leads (who were well cast). And I can't remember Thurman ever looking quite as stunning as she does in this film - just breath taking in certain scenes.
Gattaca is a very solid film all round.
