Review of Gaslight (1944) by Bethany M — 01 May 2007
What a great idea for a thriller. I love this type of film. Dark, creepy, and very atmospheric.
As for the 1940 original, which was on the back of the disc, I was also quite impressed. Anton Walbrook is much less charming and romantic than Boyer, and seems to be more in tuned with the oppresive dictator side of the role. Diana Wynyard was also quite a worthy match to Ingrid Bergman, though they had very different interpretations. Ingrid Bergman seemed to play it more as a helpless housewife, while Diana Wynyard played it with less romance and more determination. The style of the older version is reminiscent of early Hitchcocks, but lacks the atmosphere of the later version. There were a few new plot twists added to the remak, which do a great deal to enhance the story. Also, the original does not have Angela Lansbury as the flirtatious maid, which was quite a highlight.
