Review of Gaslight (1944) by Dan G — 09 Feb 2009
Some films become favorites instantly. This is one of those. A deeply thrilling movie about a woman (Ingrid Bergman) being driven slowly, methodically, and deliberately out of her mind by her evil new husband (Charles Boyer).
Bergman gives the performance of her career in this movie and was handsomely rewarded with her first Oscar. Her subdued yet evocative portrayal was fascinating, as was Charles Boyer's performance as the suave yet psychotic husband, which was certainly against cast.
A great supporting cast in Joseph Cotton, Dame May Witty, and 18-year-old Angela Lansbury (in her first ever movie role) ice the cake of a brilliant movie. A must see!
