Review of Gasland (2010) by Ray P — 27 Jan 2011
Documentarian Josh Fox does an admirable job with this film (that just received an Oscar nomination) that focuses on the 'fracking' process of drilling for natural gas in the U.S. and the horrible side effects this is causing thousands of people that have been adversely effected by this process.
The film is very real --- Fox is also the cameraman and has his subjects take the hand-held camera when he needs to get on film himself. I would have rated the film higher except for one thing --- like fellow Documentary film-maker Michael Moore, Fox does a fine job of pointing out problems and issues but does not offer any solutions. This makes even a worthwhile topic appear one-sided. We recognize that, to survive on this planet, we need to be able to harness natural gas safely and effectively. I would have liked to have seen even one person on this film discuss how that could be done. That would have made this a great film.
