Review of Gasland (2010) by Nick J — 25 Feb 2011
This film will make you laugh...and oh, by the way, its terrifying.
"Gasland" is an Oscar-nominated documentary by Josh Fox about the effects of hydraulic fracturing on the environment. Fracking, as it is known as, is a process were chemicals are used underground to almost crack the earth to let loose a "Saudi Arabia of natural gas" underneath the earth beneath the US. Common practice across large chunks of our southern neighbours, the people living around drills doing the fracking are suffering great lose.
Their soii is contaminated, their animals are dying, their health getting critical...and many of these people can light their tap water on fire.
In a very laid-back presentation, Fox will make you laugh as these families put a lighter to their faucet, but as you learn more about this inexplicable practice, brought to you in large part by Dick Cheney, the absolute fear of the realities will haunt you.
"Gasland" will hopefully be a call to action...see it now, and be ready to be horrified through the chuckles that Fox will bring about.
