Review of Garfield (2004) by Johnny T — 30 Mar 2011
The filmmakers obviously understand and love Garfield, and their movie lacks that sense of smarmy slumming you sometimes get when Hollywood brings comic strips to the screen. The comic-strip cat comes to the big screen thanks to some pretty nifty computer animation and -- in a really inspired move -- the voice of Bill Murray. A modest family film that'll be catnip for kids. Still, there's just enough Garfield 'tude (and Murray wit) to keep adults from scratching the furniture. Overall, Garfield's first movie might not be as amusing as the cartoon but it was still a lot of fun to watch.
VERDICT: "Matinée" - (Mixed reaction). These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says to pay matinée prices to see at a theatre or buy an ex rental or a cheap price the DVD to own.
