Review of Garden State (2004) by Chris O — 20 May 2010
Zach Braff is an interesting actor/director/producer. I have throughly enjoyed Scrubs and I came across 'Garden State' one day while browsing DVDs. At first I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Is it a comedy? Is it a drama? It turns out to be a quirky and very intriguing film filled with a mixture of amusing characters and some funny moments.
The plot follows Andrew 'Large' Largeman (Zach Braff), and aspiring actor, as he returns to his hometown or 'Garden State' from LA for his mother's funeral. He is on a lot of prescribed drugs for an initially unknown reason and one day while at a doctor's surgery he meets Sam (Natalie Portman) and they instantly hit it off. This makes Large become more reluctant to leave the area that he desperately tried to get away from. The script, writen by Braff, is great. The acting is superb and each character is interesting and equally bizarre as the last.
Overall, 'Garden State' is quite an emotional film as Large comes to deal with issues surrounding his family and old friends. This has shown that Zach Braff may well become a very accomplished film maker, both in front of and behind the camera.
8/10.
