Review of Garden State (2004) by Nathan M — 28 Oct 2010
I'm a sucker when it comes to chick flicks but this one was pretty boring. Most romantic comedies run on the basic storyline: boy and girl meet in an interesting way, they fall in love, have some rough spots in the middle, and they get back together.
This movie was no different when it comes to the basic outline, other than I don't think the two love interests had any rough spots. The thing is though is that they didn't make it unique. The main character was boring as hell.
The writer/director I think tried to justify his boringness by making that the character's personality. That just doesn't work though. You can't have boring characters in stories. It's just not interesting.
The one exception though I think was Natalie Portman. Her character was very interesting and she played it well. I love Natalie Portman. She's listed as my celebrity crush on my profile. haha :).
