Review of Garden State (2004) by Andrew H — 03 Oct 2010
Parts of this movie work great other parts fall kind of flat and try too hard to be quirky. The movie was often hailed as a modern "The Graduate" and there are some valid comparisons in theme.
Like "The Graduate", "Garden State" really works in the soundtrack and uses it to its advantage. Scenes with Zach Braff and his friends and most scenes with Natalie Portman work, but interaction between Braff and Holm (as his father) didn't work.
Holm seems really miscast and what is suppose to feel strained, seems to come off more as two actors in two different places.
