Review of Garden State (2004) by Lane Z — 18 May 2011
I like Braff. I like Portman. I like Saarsgard. I don't much care for anyone else in the movie, so it's a good thing the focus is primarily on the three above. Zach does a good job in his directorial debut and uses a mature storyline for the relationships between Portman and Saarsgard.
This isn't the first time I've seen the movie, but going back and watching it makes me think Braff is more suitable as a comedic actor with a sidekick than he is by himself as a serious actor.
The reason this gets 4 stars is for Portman's acting and the writing/directing job by Braff, not for Braff's acting.
