Review of Garden State (2004) by Dawn C — 22 May 2012
Why have I not seen this movie yet? I absolutely loved it. A great directorial and writing debut for Zach Braff, and his acting isn't too bad either haha. The dialogue was smart, there are quoteable moments all over the place.
The cinematography is also a lot of fun and is really well done. There is a really clear visual progression of how Andrew (Braff) changes throughout the movie. Braff himself also did a good job of portraying that.
Overall, job extremely well done by him. I'm never disappointed with Natalie Portman, and the streak continued with this one. I just loved her character. Also, Peter Sarsgaard continues to impress me.
I've seen him in a few movies lately (An Education, Green Lantern), and the way he changes from character to character is really impressive. And his stoner/grave digger role in this one was a lot of fun.
I love the story of this a lot. It's about forgiveness, growing up, finding yourself, with enough off beat humor and a token love story to keep you entertained the whole movie. This one is a definite must see.
