Review of Garden State (2004) by Jacob W — 19 Jul 2013
Garden State is surely the most overrated film of 2004. The only message that I could scrape together out of this self-important picture was "It's kinda hip to be lame". The characters are flat (or is it the actors?) and lack motivation.
Maybe it's from all that Ritalin the Zach Braff character's father has prescribed. The one exception to this is Ian Holm's character, who adds some emotional depth to a story without conflict or crisis.
Yet for the most part, these characters are unsympathetic because they seem spoiled and emotionally self-indulgent. Somewhere between burying the hamster, and listening in on Natalie Portman's favorite indie mix, I just stopped feeling very "in it".
