Review of Garden State (2004) by Robfeight — 30 Sep 2018
Garden State gets better each time I rewatch this melancholic, whimsical film. Zack Braff exhibits a fine ability to stretch his range of character acting. Natalie Portman complements Braff's acting just in a comfortably, organic tone that works perfectly.
The main success of this movie, though, is simply the story. Not too dark, not too unreasonable or difficult to suspend disbelief. It's warm-hearted and taps on the funny bone without falling into the fast-food rom-com genre.
Tenderness is felt despite, or maybe in-spite of Zach's character existing in a world of slowly fading numbness [after nine years] and stagnation/stillness in an otherwise fast flowing world.
Puts me in the mind of Wristcutters.
Thoroughly enjoyed Garden State.
For those rating this film a 'one' it must be exhaustingly, horribly miserable being that negative of an being. One vital element about writing a review: Be objective and keep your disdain for anything outside of your personal taste away from your review.
