Review of Gantz (2010) by Yz S — 23 Sep 2012
Somewhat long and overly dependent on manga stereotypes, the stylish look and the comic book premise work to entertain.
While a little on the slow side, and filled with characters that become paralyzed with fear as their first response to impending violence, the movie eventually gets moving and has some interesting surprises. The battle sequences are roller-coaster rides (once someone starts taking action) and the characters make some smart choices at the right time to intrigue the viewer.
The fact that all of the characters have died once and are now sent into some sort of survival game by a sphere packed with weapons only works because of the range of responses from the characters, from cool to determined to disbelieving. That and the flashy weapons and armor.
