Review of Gangster Squad (2013) by Sadie H — 16 Jun 2013
In 1940s Los Angeles, a covert group of cops take on Mickey Cohen and the East Coast mob. Loosely based (very loosely) on Paul Lieberman's book, "Tales from the Gangster Squad", this film could/should have been so much better.
Despite having a strong ensemble cast and a stylish look, in the end it is nothing more than overly violent shoot 'em up riddled with historic inaccuracies. Sean Penn's horrible makeup and cartoonish performance were a distraction throughout.
Skip the movie, read the book.
