Film critics as a whole are a funny breed of person. Gangster Squad was greeted with near universal disdain on its release. Watching it now on DVD it is far from perfect but it's no where near as bad as the reviews suggest.
It's is on a similar level to De Palma's The Untouchables. Both films deal with similar content in a decidedly campy, comic book manner yet De Palma's film is almost universally revered. Despite its flaws Gangster Squad is a decent gangster film.
