Review of Gangster No. 1 (2000) by Will C — 20 Sep 2007
It tries to have it both ways: over-stylized violence (complete with a haunting first-person murder scene) to keep the Guy Ritchie fans amped, yet tries to speak about what a hollow existence the main chracter has created for himself. Does McGuigan realize the irony, or is this purposeful, since we only experience one POV? Sure the same can be said for Scorsese, but these characters have little to no depth.
Direction and script are all over the place, and if it were possible for a person to mug like Jim Carrey in a voice over, McDowell does it.
Paul Bettany is perfect as a young McDowell circa Clockwork Orange.
Recommend with caution.
