Thought to be one of Scorsese's "lesser works" by some, I find Gangs of New York to be entertaining and pretty historically accurate (to a point). It takes place in New York in the mid 1800s where nativism started to rear its head.

It was a tumultuous time to be sure and nothing was held back in terms of either the violence (which is brutal) or racism/nativism in this film. Now it's supposed to be the Leo show, but Daniel Day-Lewis freaking steals the show.

I wanted to see more of him rather than Leo, who does a terrible Irish accent by the way (I understand that his accent would subside after being in the city, but it cuts in and out too much for my taste).

Also, Cameron Diaz really doesn't belong in this film. I don't fault her acting ability, just her in the film in general. The rest of the cast is awesome regardless. Scorsese's direction is great as usual.

His camera work for example during the beginning battle doesn't show the weapons entering the body which is an interesting way to "cut". It's violent yes, but more bloody than violent.

It's what you don't see that makes it more violent, but maybe that's just me. Either way I enjoy the film quite a bit and, even though it has problems (I'll be the first to admit it's not perfect), I love the historical aspect and the fantastic performance by Daniel Day-Lewis.
