Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Matthew A — 11 Sep 2011
A glorious mess that doesn't deserve Daniel Day-Lewis' magnetic performance as Bill the Butcher. Director Martin Scorsese is all over the map in this story of New York City imploding due to gangland warfare.
Somewhere imbedded within the three hour running time is about one hour's worth of a good movie. The end result is loud and overlong with one of the most overbearing music scores in recent memory.
