Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by James O — 12 May 2012
I've heard many a folk dismiss this film, so I went in expecting a modest film with one spectacular performance. What I received was far from it. This was an amazing look at race relations in the early days of new york.
Much like the film "Do The Right Thing" races slowly clash until at one point it blows up into a frenzy of violence and chaos. There are many points in this film that Scorsese expertly contrasts actions, and reactions of characters.
The prayer sequence towards the end of the film is a great example of this. Daniel Day Lewis is amazing in this film displaying one set of emotions one minute then switching to another almost without breath.
When you see him explode its one of the most terrifying things you shall ever witness. Decaprio is excellent in this film as well, and surprisingly Diaz is extremely enjoyable. All this coupled with an interesting historical backdrop makes this a must see.
Scorsese is one of cinemas all time greats and his most recent work is not given the credit it deserves in my opinion.
