Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Steve M — 04 Sep 2012
"Gangs of New York" takes us back to a time when America was a young country and New York was divided. Those who felt they were "native" Americans did not want immigrants to enter their great country.
While there is a lot of gratuitous violence and gore, the film does an excellent job portraying life as it was in New York. Leonardo DiCaprio is good as Amsterdam and he is believable in his actions and expressions, but Daniel Day-Lewis is phenomenal as he steals the show with his role as Bill the Butcher.
DDL should have won the Best Actor Oscar instead of Adrian Brody. The film also should have won a couple of Oscars for the top-notch costume and production designs that look unbelievable. However, there are some weaknesses presented in the film like the plot getting a little convoluted and messy with subplots and romantic interests.
