Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Sofya F — 15 Aug 2013
This is a frustrating film because all of the elements are there to make a great movie. You got a great director, an interesting period/story, and a cast that ranges from good to brilliant. That's why it's upsetting that the end result turned out to be such n overstuffed, over long, cliche ridden bore fest.
A third of this film should have been left on the cutting room floor. The only element of the film that works well is Daniel Day Lewis. He commands the screen and makes for a delicious villain. The supporting cast is great, but Dicaprio and Diaz have little chemistry and neither of them are nearly interesting enough to carry their portions of the film.
It attempts to be an epic and ends up being simply mediocre.
