Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Arjun S — 09 Sep 2013
Gangs of New York is an exceptional film, but it is certainly not for everyone. It can be tiring and messy, but it is magnificently produced and artistically rendering at times. I don't understand the critics who complain about it being a revenge-driven film.
It is so much more than that. Revenge is just one of the underlying themes, shrouded amongst Honor, Religion, Power in the realm of social control, and the list could go on. On top of that, just like any Scorsese film, Gangs of New York doesn't do what you expect it to--some dislike that facet.
As for me, I applaud it. Some of the scenes certainly don't play out the way one may want them to, but I certainly appreciated the artistic nature and poignancy in each one. On top of that, Daniel Day-Lewis' performance is remarkable (certainly worth a watch for that).
You may love it, you'll probably like it, but you won't hate it.
