Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Ken S — 23 Feb 2014
One of Scorsese's passion films, he first started imagining this film before he was even a name, and it took years to get the ball rolling on this one. It is an epic American tale about New York City during the Civil War and the battles between the Irish Immigrants and the "Natives" of America over who and what rules the City.
It is a well made film, with beautiful set and costume design, along with good cinematography and some well placed use of CG to make the film even more expansive. It is also happens to be Scorsese's first team up with DiCaprio.
I might've preferred someone other than Diaz, but Daniel Day-Lewis is great. It is another well made American Epic from Scorsese. Not quite on-par with "Goodfellas", but it is entertaining nonetheless.
