Review of Gangs of New York (1938) by Ryan L — 30 May 2012
What this is, is one of the finest movies made in a long, long time. One of the biggest Oscar snubs ever is (of the 10 that it lost and should have one) specifically, Daniel Day-Lewis for best supporting in this role.
Mr. Lewis makes this movie more then what it would have been without him, and without him it still would have been one of the best. Lewis delivers the performance of his career in my opinion (this followed by There Will Be Blood).
Daniel Day-Lewis in this movie in my opinion must go down as one of the top 100 performances of all time. Leonardo DiCaprio, a Scorsese staple point now, does one of his first movies with the esteemed director in Gangs.
It's probably my favorite movie they've done together too, and they've done some solid ones. This is my favorite DiCaprio movie, he in my opinion was in his prime in the early 2000's, not that he's not doing good work now, it was just better then.
Cameron Diaz... well she coulda been played by anyone and i'm sure there was a better option out there but i'm not going to complain about it. In the end Scorsese delivers arguably one of his finest films in Gangs of New York and man does he have some good ones.
All around brilliant execution with this movie. The script is tight, the dialogue perfect, and in my opinion has one hell of a soundtrack. How this movie went 0 for 10 is a complete mystery of the likes of Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster.
I just don't understand. Arguably one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time Gangs of New York is a staple in modern cinema and should be viewed by everyone that likes not only good movies, but movies in general.
