Review of Gandhi (1982) by Jason R — 23 Mar 2011
The multi-talented Richard Attenborough has garnered all kinds of awards and praise both in front of the camera with roles in films like The Great Escape and Jurassic Park, and behind the camera as a Director on films like, Chaplin. In 1982, Attenborough fulfilled a 20 year dream of filming a movie about the much loved and iconic activist Mohandas K. Gandhi.
To aid him in his quest to bring to the screen the life of Gandhi, Attenborough enlisted Ben Kingsley who delved head first into the role and learned everything from Yoga, and cotton spinning on top of becoming familiar with the man and his work.
The dedication that Attenborough and Kingsley gave to this production showed in the film, and also earned them both Academy Awards.
Gandhi is one of the most beautiful and enduring films of all time and in the vein of other Hollywood epics like Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai the film runs well over three hours, but is both engaging and thoroughly entertaining throughout.
The supporting cast is also one of the best ever assembled, with notable standouts Candice Bergen and Rohini Hattangadi who portrayed Kasturba Gandhi and whose performance aside from Kingsley's is the best in the movie and is both beautiful and mesmerizing.
This is one of the greatest films ever made and if you haven't seen it then you really, really should.
