Review of Gandhi (1982) by Raja N — 02 Sep 2011
As a film, it's Attenborough's best attempt to pull something off on a scale that David Lean would appreciate and it succeeds although Lean would have probably done things a lot differently especially in the editing.
It's really long and drags in places where it need not have, but it's such an important subject matter and historical figure that you should give it some leeway in getting it all across. Ben Kingsley is of course great as Gandhi, and it will no doubt be his best remembered role for all eternity.
he undergoes a complete metamorphisis and is ever convincing as this great man of peace and principle, one on a par with Socrates, Buddha and Jesus. It works as a history lesson as well which will enlighten those left wondering why Pakistan and India hate each other up to a thermonuclear level.
