Review of Gandhi (1982) by Uditha D — 01 Jan 2012
As all epics go, Gandhi was pretty long in my measure, but I can't deny that it's an evident masterpiece. It depicted the titular hero, that most treasured symbol of anti-imperialism - Mahatma Gandhi - in a unique and sure-footed manner.
Without Ben Kingsley in his Oscar-winning role, I don't think that would have been the case. The British were depicted in a truly brutal and cruel light, with the exception of Ian Charleson as Father Andrews and Candice Bergen as Margaret Bourke-White.
That was what made this a greatly shot epic: it had full of realism that never indulged in sentimental endeavors, and it told the story in a brave though somewhat long manner. This isn't my favorite film from 1982, and I almost think it really didn't deserve a Best Picture Oscar, but watching it was worthwhile, every bit of it.
