Review of Gandhi (1982) by Stephen E — 11 Sep 2012
When compared to other Oscar-winning biographical epics, "Gandhi" isn't outstanding, but it's an accomplished and well-intentioned motion picture, and for a 3 hour-plus film, it goes by remarkably fast, which is something I hadn't at all anticipated.
Ben Kingsley brings warmth and kindness to his character and Richard Attenborough's direction is sufficient, if simplistic. The whole production feels a little too straightforward and neglects taking time to give depth to Gandhi, which is somewhat disappointing, but what we're left with in the end is a history lesson that Attenborough has somehow made very enjoyable.
