Review of Gandhi (1982) by Valerie M — 22 Sep 2012
Mohandas K. Gandhi started out, as a lawyer then became the world's leader in peace. All Gandhi wanted was for everyone to get along and live in harmony although had to sacrifice a lot for that dream. Gandhi also wanted a free and independent India with no violence involved, but of course that did not happen. Gandhi himself never had to fight physically but he had to fight mentally and with his non-violence. The British government fought continuously and near the end so did the Muslims and Hindus. Gandhi fought for a free India and got it but then the Muslims wanted Pakistan and which left the Hindus with India, but Gandhi didn't want that because the Muslims and Hindus had been living together cohesively this whole time. When this happened war developed between Hindus and Muslims, which then caused Gandhi to fast. He was dying when all the fighting stopped because although the Hindus and Muslims were mad at each other they respected and revered Gandhi. So he stopped the fighting and was praying that things would improve when he was assassinated by someone who opposed the Hindu and Muslim peace.
This movie relates to world religion because that's what it was about in the end. Muslims and Hindus getting along. Throughout the entire movie we saw Gandhi getting along and working with people from other religions. He wanted India to have all religions living in the same area respecting each other and understanding one another. In the end Gandhi told some of the guys in his village to stop with the hatred because we are all children of God. And I think that is part of what got him killed. Wanting everyone to live together in harmony was not what everyone wanted, so they killed the source of where it was coming from Gandhi. Gandhi knew that if we could all understand that we all wanted to achieve the same thing we could live together peacefully and accomplish so much, but he may have been ahead of his time.
