Review of Gandhi (1982) by Robin D — 24 Jun 2009
Ben Kingsley shines as the Mahatma in this beautiful biography of Gandhi. It has a strong ensemble of American and Indian actors. I remember watching this film when I was in my early twenties for the first time.
I was more convinced that Kingsley was Gandhi than the old archival footage of the actual man. It is a testament to his acting prowess and how he inhabits the role. My favorite scene and the best in the film is when Gandhi is confronted during his second fast by a Hindu who has killed a Muslim child.
The Hindu is despondent that now he will be condemned to Hell for this act. Gandhi tells him that he knows a way out of Hell and that is to adopt a Muslim child as penance. That's the movie and the man for you in a nutshell.
