Review of Gandhi (1982) by Brooklyn H — 30 Sep 2012
Starting the movie with Gandhis assassination was not a plus for me. I was unsure of how Gandhi died and to start the movie with this gave an important part of his life away too soon. The movie is a documentary of Gandhis non violent movement against the British rule in India. After the death scene, it starts by him getting kicked off a train in South Africa because he was in first class, and they saw him as a person with color who was not allowed to ride in first class. He then realizes he needs to stand up for the Indians rights. He starts nonviolent protests and is arrested on many occations but finally gets the Indians right recognized. Once he arrives back in India he is asked to help lead the fight against the British rule and to help India gain independence. After many hard years of peaceful protest and little progress, the British realize Gandhi will not back down. After an outbreak of violence from the Indians, Gandhi decides to call off his protest and fast until all violence stops. After another stay in prison Gandhi again brings the Indian people together in a 200 mile walk to the sea in a peaceful protest, which evevtually leads to the British relinqhishing their rule. The freedom of India led to a religious fight between the Hindus and the Muslims. Fighting errupted between the two and again Gandhi went on a fast to oppose the fighting. Once the fighting ceased he lived trying to spread peace to the now divided India and Pakistan until his assassination.
The life of Gandhi is very inspirational he believed that the Hindu way was to live nonviolently and love everyone. He stated that he was every religion because everyone was brothers and that's how he thought people should treat each other.I think this movie portrays Gandhi very well, no matter what religion he was, he should be considered an inspiration to everyone.
