Review of Gandhi (1982) by Olivia H — 09 Oct 2012
Gandhi is about a man that wants to free Indian from the government rule of the British. In the movie the British try to persuade Gandhi into believe that the British government is better than the India government, which Gandhi agrees and states, "Any government is better than being under the government of another nation." Gandhi believes that the way to get rid of the British rule in India is by nonviolence, which he spoke of in South Africa as well. This was accomplished by supporting the British military and not fighting against them to achieve liberation from the government. Gandhi stated that it is as the bible says "turn the other cheek," which means to not cause someone to have a reason to beat you up even more or fight for anything more. Gandhi was very caring towards the poor people in India. He told everyone to burn their clothes, because the money went to the British and India should be feed instead of well dressed. In the end Gandhi died from several bullets to the head and body, which is shown at the beginning of the film.
This movie relates world religions in many ways. First of all, there are references to the bible in which Gandhi says to "turn the other cheek." He also firmly believes that kindness and nonviolence overpowers any evil, which can also be found in the bible. The movie also makes references to the fact that everyone is the same and all religions are different, but lead to the same thing which is similar to the Hindu belief of religion.
I would say that this is a very inspirational movie. It evokes us to look at ourselves to see if we purposely try to harm people or do we try to turn the other cheek. After watching this movie I realized that kindness does overpower evil in this world and that your actions have an effect on other people.
