Review of Gamera vs. Zigra (1971) by Tim S — 26 Feb 2010
Let's start with the good things.
Zigra's design is cool. The idea of him using telepathic communication was pretty cool too. There's also a few shots of Gamera walking around while breathing fire, which I found impressive. I always thought that the close-ups of Gamera breathing fire were done with a seperate model (probably were up until this one).
This being the follow-on from Gamera vs. Jiger, did make it seem bad. Partially due to the fact that Zigra doesn't show up for the first half of the movie, partially due to the fact that Gamera uses him as a xylophone (Yeah! It happens!) Having watched the dub, I want to see the Japanese cut, I have seen some of the scenes not in the American cut, which made the continuity poor in places.
Gamera vs. Zigra is not the greatest in the Showa series, far from it. But you just have to remember, It's Gamera! and It's a kids film, It's not meant to make sense.
