Review of Game Night (2018) by Dana F — 27 Aug 2018
This movie is what happens when some Hollywood writer, desperate for ideas, blurts out, "Let's remake 'The Game', but as a comedy!" And everyone looks at him like he's crazy until the CEO says, "I like it.
Do it". The most shocking part is that it actually works. This is a pretty funny movie. Considering the film is about a murder mystery dinner that goes awry, the film has a much lighter tone than I expected.
I love a good dark comedy and was a little disappointed that the humor was more gray than black... but even so, there are a whole bunch of laugh-out-loud moments. Jason Bateman is always solid as the lead in any comedy, and this one is no different.
His delivery is naturally funny, no matter what he says. Plus, the film boasts a strong, well-rounded supporting cast, who all add to the humor in their own way. I was especially impressed with Lamorne Morris.
.. I had never seen or heard of him before, but that dude is hilarious. Even Rachel McAdams is funny in it, and I hate her in damn near everything she does. The story devolves into complete stupidity by the end, but that's ok.
.. nobody is expecting realism from a movie like this. This movie is not breaking any molds... It's exactly what you expect it to be, but that's not necessarily a bad thing if you're just looking to have a good time.
This is a great option for a Friday night movie rental.
